Book one – From the ashes I rise

Chapter one: Promotion Failed
“Hello, and welcome to the Black Mesa transit system.” said the voice again. He almost knew the speech like the back of his hand by now, after several months of work at the research facility. He even got Employee Of The Month last week. And now he was going to do the test that would kickstart his career as a scientist. “The time is 8:47 am.” Of course, if he wanted to be a respected scientist, he had to be able to start to go to work in time. But this time he would be able to blame the delayed tram. Again, he was astonished by the beautiful view, at least the little he got to see from the open caves. Black Mesa was literally built on and inside tons and tons of mesas. Hence the name, he presumed. He sat down at one of the seats and leaned back, these tram rides always bored him after the first minutes. But soon enough, he actually reached Sector C test labs, and the security guard welcomed him.
“Morning, Mr Freeman. Looks like you're running late.” he didn't bother to answer, if that was the first phrase he got this morning. He followed the guard up the catwalk and waited for him to open the blast door, went inside and waited again for the other blast door. The guard behind the desk complained about his decision to cut the ponytail, even though he'd got a warning about standards. As long as he could keep the beard, he was happy. The guard opened the door after whispering “Sellout...” and not thinking Gordon would hear him, but he did. If he ever got a gun, that guy was on the list. Along with the guard at the catwalk. Or would they? Would he really have what it takes to put a bullet through a human body? He would probably find out, since they told him that he might get a promotion to the Lambda Complex, where they were doing a bit more... Dangerous stuff. He would find out, if he did this test properly.
“Hey, Mr Freeman. We had a system crash about, I don't know, 20 minutes ago and I'm still trying to find my files. They were having some problems down in the test chamber too, but I think it's all sorted out. You're supposed to head down there as soon as you get into your hazard suit.”
Whatever, he didn't have the time to hang around and listen to this guys mouth going on all day long. He had better things to do. Like getting a promotion. And possibly a new Employee Of The Month. As he passed the other scientists working there, some said “Good morning” and others “Weren't you supposed to be in the test chamber half and hour ago?” and he decided to ignore both types. When he got to the lockers, another scientist were tying his shoelaces. The scientist looked at him and sighed.
“Why do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties?” Gordon's lip twitched and he walked on to the HEV stations, and pushed the button to open the glass doors. He changed into the suit and went towards the test chamber.
“Welcome to the HEV mark IV...” where was that mute button... There! That suit voice always was so annoying.
“I remember my days in the hazardous environment suit!” said the scientist. “Of course, at that time, it was mark III.” Gordon couldn't care less. He went on through the hallways until he reached the test chamber, where some of the scientists welcomed him, along with his old professor, Isaac Kleiner. They talked and talked, but he didn't listen.
“They're waiting for you, Gordon. In the test chamber.” wow, that sounded creepy. He went down to Eli Vance, followed by Kleiner. They greeted each other, and suddenly one of the generators behind them blew up. Gordon decided to let them work on it, they would probably get done by the time he reached the test chamber.
“This might take longer...” he stopped listening and went into the elevator, the spinning elevator. He hated this one, it always made him a little sick. As he got to the blast door to the chamber, two more scientists greeted him and explained a few sudden changes for the test. But nothing seemed to be dangerous enough. They scanned their eyes to open the blast door for him, and he stepped in to the impressive chamber. He loved these tests, they looked so amazing. The technology always astonished him. The scientists in the control room messaged him to climb up and start the routers, and so he did. The three oval orbs were brought down by mechanical arms and started spinning, they activated the first energy beams as Gordon climbed down to prepare for the test sample, brought by that government Man he'd seen in the tram he passed before. He supposed that the guy was heading out of the facility to finish paperwork or something. They started the second beam and soon the specimen was delivered, held by an orange cart. He grabbed the handles and pushed it towards the beams, and as they started sending energy into it, something went wrong. Green rays of energy started to shoot against the walls.
“Get away from the beam! Attempting shutdown. It's not... It's not shutting down!” a very large energy beam was shot into the office and the scientist screamed, this was NOT giving him a promotion. He ran against the door, and his tongue was lost of words, so he just pounded the blast door with his fists, again and again. Soon he felt energy filling his body, and everything went black. He was now in a completely dark room, and a couple of creatures stepped into a sudden light. Then he was in the chamber again, and the blast door was half-opened. He ran towards it and crawled under it. Then he ran towards the door he'd entered through and tried scanning his eyes, the malfunctioning seemed to open the door even though he weren't qualified for those scanners yet. He saw a scientist doing CPR on a security guard, he passed him and ran on. He hoped Kleiner and Eli were ok.
