lmao it has been a long time since I have thought about Twilight for more than five minutes but I will try for you anon

I think that a lot of the antifeminist argument comes from the story as a whole and not just Bella’s decisions. Obviously things like her deciding to stay in Forks, to pursue a relationship with Edward, to keep her baby etc. are all her choices, yes, but the dynamics of her relationships with both Edward and Jacob (and, really, all the males in the series) take away her power and agency in almost every situation.

In New Moon, Edward chooses to leave Bella and end their relationship, because he thinks that he can make the decisions for her. Edward and Jacob fight over Bella, but neither takes into account what she actually wants (Edward takes the engine out of her car - the ENGINE out of her CAR - to stop her from seeing Jacob, Jacob kisses Bella when she has expressly told him not to, and is later congratulated for doing so by Bella’s father), which is just patronising to the max.

There’s a really gross theme in the series that Bella a human and is thus a ~~fragile flower~~ who never knows what’s best for herself and must always be protected and cherished but never touched!!!!!!! and it’s just blegh so weird and gross and then in Breaking Dawn it’s directly connected to her femininity when she and Edward have sex - but of course, even though Bella chose to marry Edward (she didn’t want to) and chose to have sex with him (he unintentionally hurt her - but that’s ok, married sex bruises are hot!!!), she gets impregnated with his demon spawn anyway. This pregnancy goes on to quite literally drain Bella’s life away until it

breaks

her spine

thus killing her, which is… wow. There’s nothing like having a woman’s vagina kill her to lampoon your new awesome feminism, Stephenie Meyer!!! But of course, Bella is saved and brought into her new life by Edward’s magical venom!! Saved by the powerful male!!

And, of course, there’s the whole “HEY BELLA WASSUP QURL JUST GOING TO SNEAK INTO YOUR BEDROOM EVERY NIGHT FOR THREE MONTHS AND WATCH YOU SLEEP….WITHOUT TELLING YOU ABOUT IT” and the “HEY BABY I’M JUST GONNA EAT YOUR TEAR RIGHT NOW” - no i am not joking:

This is just Bella’s storyline - there’s gross implications for pretty much every female character in the series. Take Rosalie and Leah Clearwater - both are women who are given superpowers (neither of them choose it - Leah gets it from her (paternal) bloodline and Rosalie is changed because - and this is awesome - Carlisle thinks she’s pretty, and he feels super bad about her fiancee, yknow, gang raping her), but of course since they have such ~awesome powers, they can’t ever have children!! Or families of their own!! Ever!! Leah can’t even imprint on a two year old like all the other cool werewolves!! Male werewolves and vampires still have power over their reproductive organs, of course - but it’s almost impossible for them to have sex with humans because they’ll, yknow, rip them apart!!!

And then there’s imprinting, which is a whole other sack of crazy. And the weird way Bella attracts all da d00dz, when she’s described over and over and plain and basic in all meanings of the word (she’s clearly meant to be a self insert for all the preteens reading these books but jfc does it have to be so blatant?).

So yeah. Bella does make a lot of the landmark decisions in her relationship with Edward, but the power balance between them is so heavily in his corner that she really can’t do anything unless Edward wants her to. Feminist revolution!!!! ''

Bara man gör en sak är det inte plötsligt sin egen dom. Alla böcker har en källa och det är böcker som är över 100 år gammla.

Jag hatar inte Twilight, jag hatar "fandomen" (det var jobbigt att böja ett engelskt ord på svenska).

Jag hatar hur vissa människor blir så tagna, och tror att livet ska vara så (vilket är väldigtväldigtväldigt ohälsosamt). Hur den får oss tjejer att bli beroende av vår "man".
Jag hatar att mina twilightälskande kompisar kan säga vad som helst om HP, men mina åsikter kring Twilight räknas inte.
